Endometrial receptivity tests
Felicitas Mehiläinen studies embryo implantation disorders with two different tests.
Implantation of the embryo is the phase in which a developing embryo attaches itself to the uterine wall at the beginning of pregnancy. Before the embryo attaches itself to the endometrium of the uterine wall, there are many changes that prepare the attachment site and its the surrounding area for receiving the embryo. The endometrium grows and changes its shape, the uterine vasculature changes and the correct quantities of cells, nutrients and special molecules needed for attachment accumulate. The endometrium is receptive to the embryo only for a limited period of time during the menstrual cycle (the implantation window).
If pregnancy has not begun, the reason might be in a disorder of the uterine mucosa. Sometimes certain genes that regulate attachment can become active in an abnormal way. In such cases, the development of the mucous membrane may be delayed or excessively rapid, preventing even a good embryo from attaching. Different rejection processes can also prevent attachment or cause miscarriage. On the other hand, it may sometimes be the case that immunological processes do not work as effectively as required.
If fertility treatment has failed despite multiple transfers of good embryos, there may be an imbalance between the embryo and the mucosa or an immunological disorder.
Endometrial tests
Felicitas Mehiläinen uses two different tests to investigate embryo implantation disorders.
Endometrial receptivity test
The endometrial receptivity test can be used to distinguish between rejection of the embryo and immunological deficiency and to determine whether the situation is normal, so that other factors, perhaps related to the embryo, are causing the treatment to fail.
Endometrial timing test
This test can be used to evaluate the ability of the endometrium to receive an embryo. The test measures the presence of genes that indicate the receptivity of the mucous membrane and indicates disturbances in the implantation window. Based on the results of the test, the embryo transfer time can be delayed or brought forward to a more suitable time.
