POC study
The POC study makes it possible to determine whether the miscarriage was due to a chromosomal abnormality.
Unfortunately, some clinically diagnosed pregnancies end prematurely, the majority of which end already during the first trimester. More than 50% of these cases are due to chromosomal abnormalities.
All foetal cells must have two copies of each chromosome, one from the mother’s egg and one from the father’s sperm. In total, each cell must contain 46 chromosomes. Chromosomal abnormalities resulting from an incorrect number of chromosomes can lead to miscarriage.
The product of conception (POC) study makes it possible to determine whether the miscarriage was due to a chromosomal abnormality. The study determines all chromosomes in the miscarriage tissue with the NGS technology. In addition to the tissue sample, a blood sample from the mother is needed.
What are the benefits of a POC study?
The study is highly reliable and results are obtained in 99% of cases. The study is particularly useful in the case of repeated miscarriages or after fertility treatments.
The research result can be used in the selection of treatment methods, for example, preimplantation genetic diagnosis can be used to examine the embryo’s chromosomes before the embryo is transferred to the uterus. The results of the study are reviewed and the necessary follow-up measures are planned at an appointment.
