In spite of advanced assisted fertility treatment methods, some couples cannot have a child using their own eggs or sperm. If the body cannot produce eggs or sperm or if they are affected by a functional disorder, or if a child born to such a couple would face a significant risk of hereditary disease, donated eggs or sperm may be used instead.
